How We Tested

Our test dog, a 55 pound Border Collie named Tess, used the Chillz Large daily for 6 weeks. Room temperatures ranged from 72 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit. We measured surface temperature every 30 minutes with an infrared thermometer.

The Chillz cooled to 66 degrees in a 78 degree room within 60 seconds of Tess lying down. Surface temperature held between 66 and 72 degrees for the first 3 hours. After hour 4, the mat warmed to within 4 degrees of ambient.

Recharge time was 15 to 20 minutes off the mat. Tess used the mat 4 to 6 times per day during peak heat. The cycle of use, get off, recharge, reuse worked well for daily patterns.

The nylon shell wiped clean easily. We wiped after each muddy outdoor session and after the dog drooled on it (which happened daily). No staining or odor after 6 weeks.

Who Should Buy This

The Chillz is the right pick if you want cooling without setup, your dog is between 25 and 100 pounds, and you want a mat you can move around the house or take on car trips. It works well for dogs of all ages who do not chew their bedding.

Skip it if your dog is an aggressive chewer, you need 6+ hours of continuous cooling, or you live in a 90+ degree room with poor ventilation. In those cases, the K&H Cool Bed water-fill option works better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Chillz cooling mat actually work?

Yes. In our 6-week test, the Chillz Large dropped surface temperature 12 degrees below room temperature when our test dog (a 55 lb Border Collie) lay on it. Cooling lasted 3 to 4 hours per session. The mat recharged in 15 to 20 minutes once she got off.

How long does the Chillz cooling mat stay cool?

About 3 to 4 hours of continuous contact in a 75 to 85 degree room. After that, the gel matches your dog's body temperature and stops actively cooling. Once your dog gets off the mat, it recharges in 15 to 20 minutes and is ready for the next session.

Is the Chillz gel safe for dogs?

Yes. Chillz uses non-toxic, food-grade pressure-activated gel. If a dog punctures the mat and licks the gel, contact your vet but the gel is not poisonous in small amounts. Heavy chewers should not use any gel mat unsupervised.

How do I clean the Chillz cooling mat?

Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. Do not put the mat in the washing machine. Do not soak the mat. Air dry. The nylon surface dries within an hour at room temperature.

What size Chillz mat should I get?

Measure your dog from nose to tail base when lying down. Add 4 inches. Pick the next size up. For a 55 lb dog, the Large (23.6 x 35.4 inches) fits comfortably. For 80+ lb dogs, choose XL (35.4 x 43.3 inches).

Can I use the Chillz mat in the car?

Yes. The Chillz mat folds flat and travels well. Place it on the seat or in the crate. The mat provides cooling on contact without needing power or setup. Never use the mat as a substitute for proper car ventilation in hot weather.

Chillz vs K&H Cool Bed: which is better?

The Chillz mat is cheaper ($30 vs $70), needs no setup, and travels well. The K&H Cool Bed cools longer (6 to 8 hours vs 3 to 4), works for senior dogs with joint pain, but needs water filling and a fixed location. Pick Chillz for portability and budget. Pick K&H for daily indoor use.

How long does the Chillz mat last?

With normal use, the Chillz mat lasts 2 to 3 summers. The gel can degrade over time and after many recharge cycles. The nylon shell holds up well if your dog does not chew it. Many owners report 4+ years of use.

Will my dog use the Chillz mat?

Most dogs use the Chillz mat within 2 to 3 days. Place it in a spot your dog already rests. The cool surface itself becomes the reward in hot weather. If your dog avoids it at first, add a familiar blanket on top for the first week.

Can the Chillz mat be used outdoors?

Yes, in shaded areas. Direct sunlight reduces cooling effectiveness because the sun heats the mat from above. The Chillz works well on a covered porch or under a tree. For full-sun outdoor use, an elevated mesh bed like the Coolaroo works better.
